ICT

The Information Communication Technology Department aim to make learning the subject as enjoyable as possible.  We don’t limit the subject to just teaching Desktop Publishing and Office programs, there’s also video editing, in both Movie Maker and Serif Movie Plus, Web Design, Animation and Digital Photography.

In Crickhowell High School there are 2 dedicated ICT rooms, with 2 additional rooms existing in other departments (English and DT). The 2 ICT rooms (ICT1 & 2) are situated on Level 1 of the New Block, and contain 67 computers between them (35 in ICT1 and 32 in ICT2). In additon to these dedicated rooms, we also have 2 trollies containing 32 laptops in total, these trollies are ROAMING and all of the facilities can be booked by staff for use in lessons.

Key Stage 3

During Years 7-9, students follow the National Curriculum for ICT. They are also given the opportunity to gain a Level 2 qualification in ICT in Year 9. This qualification is currently a OCR Nations Level 2 in ICT. This Key Skill ICT qualification provides an excellent platform to use their ICT skills for the rest of their time that they are within the school and beyond. The aim of Key Stage 3 is that the students learn enough ICT to do most of the tasks that would be required in business whilst providing them with a range of experiences to use ICT in innovative ways.  Examples of the areas that we study include:

  • Desktop Publishing
    • Word Processing
    • Leaflet and Flyer design
    • Slide shows
  • Animation/Graphic Design
    • Drawing in an artistic style
    • Animating those drawings
  • Web Design
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Movie Making
    • Both in Windows Movie Maker
    • and Serif Movie Plus

Key Stage 4/GCSE

At Key Stage 4 we currently provide an OPTION based course for ICT. This course is the OCR National First Award in ICT. It provides an opportunity for students to gain a GCSE equivalent qualification in ICT. The qualification is taught as a full course of 5 hours across a two week timetable. The units that we cover include Skills for Business and Movie editing. The aim of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to build upon their ICT skills from Key Stage 3.

There is no exam for the OCR qualification, just continually assessed portfolio work.  This reduces the stress students face during exam season.

The software we use is kept up to date as much as we can, with new software added all the time.  After the major network rebuild during 2006/2007 we are aiming to keep with a 5 year infrastructure cycle so that the systems will be kept up to date.

Key Stage 5/A-Level

At Key Stage 5 we currently provide an OPTION based course for ICT. This course is the OCR National Second Award in ICT. It provides an opportunity for students to gain a A-Level equivalent qualification in ICT. The qualification is taught as a full course of 5 hours across a week timetable. The units that we cover include Skills for Business and Movie editing. The aim of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to build upon their ICT skills from GCSE
