Powys School Modernisation

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We enclose the Powys Informal Consultation Document which has just arrived at Crickhowell High School and which we have been asked to pass on to you by Powys Education Authority.

You may recall we wrote to you before Christmas regarding the Secondary School Modernisation in Powys and we are now at the stage where a possible model has been outlined and put out to informal consultation.  You may find this document alarming as it appears to propose that the future of Crickhowell High School as a separate entity could be in doubt in the near future.

Firstly, we want to assure you that Crickhowell High School will remain open for all our students to be educated from the age of eleven to the age of eighteen.   We will remain as a Community Focused School in Crickhowell, serving the needs of students, parents, families and the wider community but we need your help to ensure we are able to retain our own separate identity and independent management which will allow us to ensure Crickhowell remains in the top 500 schools in the UK and at the very top in Wales for our GCSE and A Level results.

You may infer from the document that it proposes a preferred model but in fact it is only an Informal Consultation and the costings it refers to, as well as the pupil numbers it suggests, are not accurate but rather an estimate only.  The suggested savings are therefore only outline.  We are working closely with the Governing Body and the staff of the school to put forward a detailed and accurate business plan which would support Crickhowell remaining as a separate, highly efficient, cost effective and quality led school.

We would request that all parents attend a Public Meeting with officers from Powys Authority which is to be held on March 14th 2011 at Crickhowell High School commencing at 6.30pm.  This will be a very important meeting. It is vital to have as many parents as possible attend.

We would also like to invite you to a pre meeting at school on March 3rd 2011 at 4.15pm to formulate some key questions for the Powys Team which need to be put forward to express fully the views of the community on the proposed model outlined in this document.  If you are unable to attend this meeting but have questions to be considered please submit them to us before the meeting.

We sincerely hope you will be able to attend.    Should you wish to discuss this beforehand please contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Jackie Parker                                                                                     Alan Peggrem
