It was a great weekend for Crickhowell High School skiers in the Welsh Schools Championships in Llangrannog. The girls’ ski squad retained their gold medal position, winning the coveted Welsh Schools Ski for the second time. The original squad of Saskia Henry Davies, Year 11, Erin Higgins Year 10 and Manon Higgins, Year 10 were strengthened by Maisie Williams, Year 10 and Evie-Phillips Year 9. There were individual medals too: Saskia, won gold in her individual Under 18 registered racer category, Erin (currently British Under 16 Champion) won silver in the Under 16 registered category and Manon won bronze. The twins have both been admitted into the Welsh Ski Squad this year and Saskia is a hair’s breadth away. Saskia was ranked second in Wales in her age group at the Welsh Championships in Llandudno in September while Manon was ranked third in Wales in her age category.
Evie-Mae and Maisie were competing in their first ever Welsh Schools Championships and didn’t put a foot wrong – Evie was second in Wales for Unregistered Girls Under 14 and Maisie narrowly missed a medal coming 4th for Unregistered Girls under 16. Fabulous skiing girls! The girls’ squad now look forward to the British Schools Championships in Llandudno at the end of November.
Crickhowell entered a Boys’ team in the Welsh Schools Championships for the first time this year. The team of Matias Delgado Santaleulalia, Year 9, Daniel Woollard, Year 10, Osian James, Year 8 and Tomos James, Year 11 didn’t make a single mistake and took 5th position in a very competitive race. 5th position qualified them for the British Schools race in November – a great achievement on their first entry. The boys’ team are developing well, with Osian winning silver for Unregistered Boys Under 14 and Daniel winning silver for Unregistered Boys Under 16. Matias narrowly missed a medal, coming 4th for Unregistered Boys Under 16 in a large field.
