There was great success for Crickhowell High School at the South East Wales Schools’ Ski competition this week.
The new Boys’ team won team silver medals on their first ever outing with Matias Delgado Santaleulia (Year 8) also winning individual gold for Under 16 unregistered boys and Osian James (Year 8) winning individual gold for Under 14 unregistered boys.
With only 2 in the team, the boys couldn’t afford any mistakes and they didn’t make any – a fantastic first race for both boys.
Crickhowell Girls’ first team won the plaque which is being awarded for the first time this year, with Erin Higgins (Year 9) winning the girls’ competition overall and taking gold for fastest Under 16 registered girl with twin Manon winning silver in the girls’ competition overall and also taking silver for Under 16 registered girls. Saskia Henry-Davies (Year 10 and team captain) got gold for fastest Under 18 registered girl and got bronze for the girls’ competition overall.
Crickhowell Girls’ second team did a great job too, winning team silver. Arwen Hobson (Year 11) the second team captain, posted really good times, despite hardly skiing over the last year due to the pandemic and GCSEs. She won individual silver for fastest Under 18 registered girl. It was Arwen’s last ski race for Crickhowell as she emigrates to New Zealand in September and she will be badly missed by the Crickhowell Ski Squad. Newcomers, Maisie Williams (Year 9) and Evie-Mae Phillips (Year 8) put in really good performances in their first ever ski race with Maisie winning individual gold for fastest Under 16 unregistered girl and Evie-Mae winning individual gold for fastest Under 14 unregistered skier.
We would still like more young male and female skiers to strengthen our ski squad, so if there is anyone in Years 7 or 8 who have skied at least twice on snow and might be interested in skiing for the school, please contact Julia Hawkins on email@example.com.
