After a gruelling 4 days of training, Crickhowell’s Girls’ Team skied extremely well at the Welsh Alpine Championships in Champery, Switzerland last week. All 4 girls competed in two Giant Slalom races and two Slalom races.
First to race was Erin Higgins, Year 8, who was deprived of a very fast time in the first Giant Slalom race by a spectacular fall near the end of the course. Despite this bad shake up, she went on to post the fastest time of all the Crickhowell girls in the second Giant Slalom race. Erin’s fall left twin, Manon Higgins, to post the fastest joint time in the two Giant Slalom races. However, the highly competitive Under 14 Welsh category, which includes several Swiss and French skiers with Welsh grandparents, meant that there was no podium place for the Under 14 Higgins twins. Arwen Hobson (year 10) took Welsh gold and Saskia Henry-Davies (Year 9) took Welsh silver in the Under 16 age group for Giant Slalom.
In the first slalom race, Saskia Henry-Davies posted the fastest Crickhowell time and Arwen Hobson was second fastest Crickhowell girl. An exceptionally fast first run by Manon Higgins was thwarted by her missing a gate, requiring her to hike back up to complete the course only 3 seconds slower than Saskia. Manon went on to post the fastest Crickhowell time in the second slalom race but Saskia posted the fastest joint slalom Crickhowell time and won Welsh gold in the slalom Under 16 category.
We are always looking to recruit more skiers to form a second girls’ team and a boys’ team, if anyone is interested please contact Julia Hawkins via email: email@example.com
