All four members of Crickhowell Girls’ Ski Team competed in the Welsh National Ski Championships this weekend, with great success. Erin Higgins from Year 8 achieved the fastest times out of any of the Crickhowell girls and this was enough for her to win bronze, coming third in Wales in the highly competitive Under 14 category, with twin Manon Higgins coming fourth in this category. A fall caused Arwen Hobson (Year 10), who was skiing beautifully, to lose her medal chances in her first ever Welsh National Dry Slope Championships but Saskia Henry-Davies (Year 9) was luckier, receiving a trophy for coming first in Wales in the Under 16 girls category, also in her first ever Welsh championship. All 4 team members performed strongly this weekend, bringing their seed points, which denotes their ranking in the UK, down. These championships were for individual racers but the team’s next challenge is in the Welsh School Team Championships in Llangrannog on 29th September, where they are hoping to be placed in the team medals.
If you are interested in joining the ski team and can either ski parallel turns on snow or are used to skiing on a dry slope, then contact Julia Hawkins on firstname.lastname@example.org. (Parental involvement would be required on a Wednesday evening to take skiers to Pontypool Dry Slope. Boys as well as girls would be welcome).
